September 27, 2021 Update

Published by Jamie on

Our September 21st update generated some questions we would like to help answer.  In summary, the recommendation from this update was that property owners should:

1) have a video analysis of the sanitary sewer lateral done from the clean out in your basement to the curb, or approximately 15’
2) replace that portion of the sewer line if the video analysis shows there is a problem; and
3) determine whether you want or need to replace your water service.

Some of the questions that came in were…

1. How much will each of these cost?
We have asked the contractor (Montana Construction of Lodi, NJ) who was awarded the bid by the Borough for price quotes on all three services and we will forward once received.  This will give you at least one quote of how much the work will cost.  Some rough estimates based on internet searches and a few phone calls are:Video analysis of the sanitary sewer line:  Approximately $500Replacement of the sanitary sewer line from your building to the curb where the Borough work ends:  Approximately $2k-$4kReplacement of the water service:  Approximately $5k-$10k

2. What should I do first?
We recommend the video analysis of the sanitary sewer lateral first and that will determine whether you need to replace the sanitary sewer lateral.  This is a standard service performed by most sewer cleaning companies and many larger plumbers.  An internet search will reveal several local contractors that do this work.  There is no need to coordinate this with anyone or obtain any permits.

Next determine whether you want to replace your water service.  Our September 21st update gave you some criteria to help you determine whether you should replace it.

3. Should I receive estimates to replace my sewer lateral and water service now?
It is best to wait until we receive the estimates from Montana Construction.  Once we receive them, we will forward them to you with contact information for you to follow up.  You can then use these estimates to make sure other contractors are quoting on the same type of work.

4. Can I use any contractor?
For the videoing of your sanitary sewer lateral you can use any contractor. For replacing your sanitary sewer lateral you will need a licensed plumber. For replacing your water service you will need to use either Montana Construction (the contractor doing the Borough work) or Mark Woszczak, Mechanical Contractor, in Manasquan.  The Borough limits what contractors can tap into the water main as to avoid damages.  Mark was the low bidder for the work this year.

5. How do I coordinate between doing my work with the Borough’s work?
For videoing the sanitary sewer line, no coordination is needed. For replacing the sanitary sewer lateral, it should be done after the Borough’s contractor has replaced the main line and the lateral up to the curb.  Ideally this would be done immediately after the Borough’s work while the road is still closed.  This would also need to be done prior to the concrete and road work expected to take place in the Spring.  If you use the contractor doing the Borough’s work, they will coordinate it themselves. For replacing the water service it should be done while the contractor is working in the area and that section of the road is closed.  If you use the contractor doing the Borough’s work, they will coordinate it themselves.

6. Am I required to do any of this?
No! All this work is optional. Our September 21st update listed several reasons why you should, but you do not have to.  We encourage you to please continue sending in your questions.  We would also appreciate any helpful feedback that could be passed along to others. For example, if you have the sewer line videoed you could let us know who did it, what they charged and your experience with them so that information can be included in these updates.
